Temporary Skill Shortage Visa(subclass-482)
This visa facilitates targeted use of overseas workers to address temporary skill shortages, while ensuring that Australian workers get priority. TSS visa holders can work in Australia in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor under one of three streams.
- The Short-Term stream
- The Medium-Term stream
- The Labour Agreement stream.
Short-Term Stream
This stream is available if your employer wishes to sponsor you (as an overseas skilled worker) on a temporary basis only in occupations listed on the Short-term Skilled Occupation list (STSOL) for a TSS visa . It can be used to fill positions for a maximum of two years or four years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies.
Medium-Term Stream
This stream is available if your employer wishes to sponsor you (as an overseas skilled worker) for periods of up to four years in occupations listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Regional Occupation List (ROL) for a TSS visa
Labour-Agreement Stream
This stream is available if your employer wishes to sponsor you (as an overseas worker) and has entered into a labour agreement with the Department
Steps to get Temporary Skill Shortage Visa
The process for TSS visa who want to work in Australia
- Step 1: A sponsorship application by the employer
- Step 2: A nomination application for a skilled position by the employer
- Step 3: A visa application by the proposed employee
Even though the above mentioned process needs to be completed in order but you don’t have to wait for the approval to go to next step.
Benefits of Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482)
This visa allows you to travel in and out of Australia for the duration of the visa period
- If you are the primary visa holder, to work in Australia in your nominated occupation for an approved sponsor (or an associated entity of a sponsoring Australian employer)
- If you are a family member, to work and study in Australia.
Eligibility
Should have been nominated for a position by an approved sponsor and the nomination should has been approved. Before you can apply for a TSS visa, your proposed employer will need to lodge a nomination application for you. They will only be able to do this if they are an approved sponsor or have at least lodged an application to become a standard business sponsor.

- Meet the required skills and qualifications criteria including completing any skills assessments required
- Meet English language requirements
- If in Australia, hold a substantive visa, a subclass 010 (Bridging A) visa, a subclass 020 (Bridging B) visa or a Subclass 030 (Bridging C) visa should be compiled with any conditions or applied to your last visa .
- Meet the health and character requirements
- Meet the requirements of the stream in which you apply.
- There is no age requirement for this visa.
- If you have worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years you will be working directly for your sponsor or for an associated entity of your sponsor
Additional Eligibility
Short-term stream
In addition to the above general requirements you should also have :
- Worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years
- A genuine applicant for entry and stay as a short term visa holder (known as a ‘Genuine Temporary Entrant’ (GTE))
- To work directly for your sponsor or for an associated entity of your sponsor, unless the nominated occupation is exempt from this requirement .
Medium-term stream
In addition to the above general requirements you should have :
- Worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years
- Work directly for your sponsor or for an associated entity of your sponsor, unless the nominated occupation is exempt from this requirement .
Labour agreement stream
In addition to the above general requirements you should have :
- Been nominated in an occupation included in a labor agreement which your employer has entered into with the Department
- Worked in your nominated occupation, or a related field, for at least two years (unless this is not required under the labor agreement).
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa – English language requirement
It is important that overseas workers are fluent in English. As a result, primary TSS visa applicants are required to demonstrate that they meet certain minimum standards of English language proficiency (as outlined below) unless exemptions apply.
Members of your family unit included in your visa application are not required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
English testing arrangements
The following tests can be given to determine your level of English language proficiency
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Occupational English Test (OET)
- Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic test
- Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test
The test must have been completed within three years from the date of lodging a valid visa application and the required test scores must be met.
Required test scores
Unlike other visas the required result in the test has to be achieved in a single attempt at the test. You cannot combine the required result from two or more separate test attempts.
A higher level of English might be required for certain occupations where it is a requirement for registration, licensing or membership in Australia. You can find out if your occupation requires a higher level of English by contacting the registration authority for your nominated occupation.
Short term stream
The results required for short term stream
- In IELTS the overall band score should be at least 5.0 with a score of at least 4.5 in each of the test components.
- OET score of at least ‘B’ in each of the four components
- In TOEFL a total score of at least 35 with a score of at least 3 for each of the test components of listening and reading, and a score of at least 12 for each of the test components of speaking and writing
- In PTE Academic an overall test score of at least 36 with a score of at least 30 in each of the test components
- In CAE an overall test score of at least 154 with a score of at least 147 in each of the test components.
Medium term stream
The required results for medium term stream
- In IELTS an overall band score of at least 5.0 with a score of at least 5 in each of the test components.
- OET score of at least ‘B’ in each of the four components
- In TOEFL total score of at least 35 with a score of at least 4 for each of the test components of listening and reading, and a score of at least 14 for each of the test components of speaking and writing
- In PTE Academic an overall test score of at least 36 with a score of at least 36 in each of the test components
- In CAE overall test score of at least 154 with a score of at least 154 in each of the test components.
