Today’s draw is the first of the month and comes after a busy summer. During July and August, IRCC invited candidates in 14 different Express Entry draws. More specifically, July broke the record for the most draws in a month since the system was launched in 2015. Nine draws took place between July 2 and 31.

The most recent Express Entry was held on August 27, sending out invitations to 3,330 candidates, with only candidates from the Canadian Experience Class program considered.

IRCC has recently adopted a pattern of multiple draws every other week. This typically includes at least one draw for PNP candidates. This is consistent with IRCC’s previously stated intention to hold more “domestic” draws to ensure that temporary residents in Canada have the opportunity to become permanent residents and to reduce the number of temporary residents entering Canada.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an application management system introduced by IRCC in 2015 to help the department select economic immigration candidates with human capital attributes in demand. It oversees three economic immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

The comprehensive ranking system is the cornerstone of this system. It assigns points to applicants based on a number of characteristics such as their language ability, work experience, education, occupation and age.

These marks are combined to form the overall score of the candidate. Those with the highest marks have the highest chances of getting ITA.

Candidates in these programs can also apply for streams of the Provincial Nominee Program that are aligned with Express Entry, a process known as advanced nomination. Express Entry candidates who nominate through the PNP automatically receive an additional 600 CRS points, making it highly likely that they will receive an ITA in an upcoming Express Entry draw, depending on the type of draw.

IRCC will also introduce category-based selection draws in 2023 to allow the department to target candidates with more specific in-demand characteristics, mostly based on work experience. Candidates receiving an ITA in one of these draws do not need to be in a specific Express Entry program (although they must still be in the Express Entry application pool) and the minimum CRS required is generally lower than for program-specific or general draws.

These are the six categories:

  • Healthcare Business
  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) professions
  • Trade occupations, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors
  • Transportation Business
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food Business
  • Proficiency in French Language

IRCC reviews these categories each year and states that due to changes in labour market preferences and demographic demands, the categories may change in the coming years.
